Is AwayWard free?
Yes. AwayWard is free to play, start to finish. There is no required purchase to access any system, zone or feature.
Is it pay-to-win?
No, and that is a core promise. Every purchase is cosmetic or convenience only: character and house looks, transmog, extra save slots and supporter packs. You can never buy power, gold or gacha luck. With a shared economy and a public leaderboard, keeping that fair is the whole point.
Can I really play it offline?
Yes. Flip one setting and the entire world runs solo. A full cast of 42 rival adventurers keeps leveling, stocks the market and fills the leaderboard with no connection. It is built for a flight, a commute, or a quiet evening. When you reconnect, your progress syncs and the real players return.
Does my hero really keep playing while the game is closed?
Yes. Offline auto-combat banks gold, XP, gear and pets while you are away, up to a 4 hour base cap that the Camp Lantern upgrade raises by 2 hours per level, up to 24 hours. You come back to a "While You Were Away" report of everything you earned.
Is there PvP?
Not in the competitive, real-time sense. The multiplayer here is co-op and asynchronous: a shared player market, co-op parties, faction world raids and community seasons. The draw is the shared economy, collection and community, not a combat ladder.
What powers the online world?
A live backend (FastAPI on Railway) runs the real player-to-player systems: the market, parties, factions and clans, the server-wide world raid, community seasons and the leaderboard. If it is ever unreachable, every online screen falls back gracefully to the local rival simulation, so the game is always playable.
What is it built with?
Godot Engine 4.7. AwayWard is a complete 2D port of the original AwayWard Discord game, with the exact source combat and balance formulas (verified by 174 engine-parity checks) plus a new online layer and a lot of quality-of-life.
What platforms can I play on?
It currently ships as a self-contained Windows build, and it uses the Compatibility (OpenGL / ANGLE) renderer so it runs on older and integrated GPUs, not only Vulkan-capable machines. Godot is cross-platform, so other targets can follow.
How do I play with a friend?
Online, you can invite friends to a co-op party by code, join the same faction, and raid the world boss together. To share the game itself, send the full self-contained build (the exe plus its runtime files), not a lone exe, and your friend unzips everything into one folder and runs it.
Will my data carry over from the Discord version?
The Godot edition is its own client with its own saves (stored locally per slot). It faithfully ports the design, content and formulas of the source game rather than importing existing Discord save data.
